I asked the CEO a question and was surprised by his answer. Not that I don’t work hard and not that I am not liked and bringing great value. The CEOs job is to look at things differently. My job is much more narrow of a focus. And I see things through my own eyes and am translating my own experiences.
My immediate reaction was anger and frustration- that is how I am wired. So I did my best to step out of my own brain and see if I could identify areas for improvement. I took a long hard look at myself- saw tons of positives and reasons why I am a really respected professional, but definitely saw some key areas of opportunity to grow and improve.
So we nurture my positives so they continue to evolve and we focusing on cleaning up those negative outliers. We don’t allow our brain to lie to ourselves and tell us how great we are. We acknowledge where are doing brilliantly and we work on where we aren’t.
Growth isn’t easy, accountability isn’t pretty. But it’s an important skill.
